How A Suite of Baby Clothes Came to Be

Our sweet neighbors were expecting their first baby so I wanted to sew them something extra special for their baby shower. They opted not to know the gender of the baby to avoid gender stereotypes so I was challenged to make something that was gender neutral. No frilly tutus, ruffled bottom onesies or helicopter onesies for this baby!   I wanted to make something out of a soft knit for the newborn, but knit material with a decent pattern is hard to find in fabric stores. I found this shirt discounted to just $6 which I figured could tear apart and use the fabric:

I really liked the colors and stripes and since the shirt was XL, it gave me lots of material to work with. The gray and yellow could work for a baby boy or for a baby girl.   The shirt inspired a whole complete outfit for the baby.  First, I made these newborn baby pants (using this free pattern):

Which inspired me to make this matching onesie:

Which led to this matching hat (see my tutorial here):

All of which are customized with their last name:

All these clothes needed a matching gift bag:

Which of course needed a custom clay gift tag (see my tutorial here):

The complete suite, all together now:

My neighbors said that they packed the outfit in their hospital bag to dress the baby on its way home from the hospital!
